VISUAL
DYSLEXIA
The
solution - what to do
Observation.
Watch the child. Often a child suffering from dyslexia will display
abnormal posture or clumsey behaviour. Many will turn their book
to one side, or cover one eye when reading, or have difficulty
catching a ball - see what a child may
experience.
Signs and symptons.
Under achievement, reversals, inversions etc (see what
a child may experience) and unexplained underperformance.
Many children who have concentration problems, behaviour problems
and low self esteem, suffer from measurable visual problems.
The teacher should be trained to ascertain why the child is underperforming
and to be proficient in the use of such aids as the Visual
Tracking Magnifier, the Optim-Eyes
lamp and basic visual screening tests.
The CD rom Visual Dyslexia Assessment
Module is a comprehensive method of primary assessment
and will produce a referral letter for opticians.
If a child shows significant symptoms then an in depth assessment
by an optician will be necessary to fulfil the duty of care.
